David demos the prototype to Kartin
Three weeks later, they can demo the product to Kartin after hours of pushing the system’s limits, trying to make it crash or produce untenable results.
He wants to assess Kartin’s every eyebrow lift and grimace, so he sets up the system to project onto a large screen. David clears his throat as Kartin walks in and is about to start when Kartin cuts him with a whip of a hand. “Just show me what you’ve got. We can talk afterwards.”
Kartin walks to where Jessica is seated at the laptop. “Okay, what have you set up?”
Jessica stammers, “The results from the simulation we did this week.” She displays the analysis with the bright graphics and charts.
“As you can see, Auger,” David raises his voice slightly and points to the larger screen, “DynaGroup shows the group as polite and not interrupting much. I played the manager and while I spoke most, it was within the normal range for the meeting chair.”
“But it’s not a real group, right?”
“No, but we needed to be sure the features operated well. And they do.”
He looks up and seems to see Sonja for the first time. “Sonja. How is your mother?”
“Very well, Auger. Thanks for asking.”
“What…” and then “Right—you’re the consulting psychologist. So, did the product do what David here says?”
She laughs and Auger responds with a reluctant lifting of the corners of his mouth. “Oh ye of little faith. Yes, it performed perfectly. We still need to test on an intact team but the functions reported exactly what I observed in the trial group.”
“Excellent. Excellent.” Kartin rubs his hands together in what David cannot help but be reminded of Mr. Scrooge. Kartin turns to David. “Well, I would have preferred this three weeks ago for the executive committee, but better late than never.”
David does not even consider protesting. “We’ll do field testing in the next couple of weeks but don’t anticipate any big changes. We’re on track for the end of the month.”
Kartin nods. “I’ve been telling my wife about DynaGroup. She chairs the board of a small charity and she’s complained about how badly the group operates. Maybe you could use her meetings as a test.”
David takes a moment to respond, suppressing amazement that Kartin has a personal life and that he mentioned DynaGroup in it. “Ah, sure. Although we need to do it within the next couple of weeks…”
“Second Monday of the month. Perfect timing. Get her number from my office.”
Sonja and David drop into boardroom chairs after Kartin leaves and look at Jessica. They laugh and high five each other. “Okay!” says David. “We’re good to go. Sonja, you said you had a line on another test group?”
Sonja nods. “It’s an old client. He has large meetings—fifteen, sometimes almost twenty. He’s thinking of creating a smaller management team but he wants to know whether the group operates well now. If so, he might not bother.”
David nods. “That’s a good use. Can you set that up?”
David is on top of the world.
